Aluminum, known by its symbol Al, is the third most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. Aluminum and its alloys are vital components in a number of modern products and structural elements used today. It is known for its low density and ability to resist corrosion making it the most widely used non-ferrous metal.
Millions of tons of the metal are produced each year for global combustion. Countless manufacturing facilities use aluminum to produce products ranging from construction and aerospace materials to consumer products.
During fabrication processes, aluminum dust can become a potential combustible dust hazard. Just this year, a factory in China experienced an explosion that killed 3 workers and injured 15. The factory produced contract electronics and some reports indicate that high levels of aluminum dust in an air duct at a polishing shop within the plant caused the disaster.
In the U.S., in 2003 a manufacturing plant in Indiana experienced a combustible dust explosion that was also linked to aluminum dusts. The plant produced car wheels and the explosion resulted in the death of a 33 year old plant mechanic.
“Aluminum dusts, like many dusts, can be an explosion hazard under the right conditions,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading combustible dust testing laboratory. “Aluminum fines can be generated during grinding, sawing, sanding and cutting operations. The extent of the hazard can be determined by explosibility testing at EMSL Analytical. In addition to combustible dust testing for aluminum, EMSL also offers a number of testing services for all types of materials for everything from resistivity to explosion severity analysis.”
EMSL recently sponsored an educational video about combustible dust hazards that can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX0apupkO3E
