Title Environmental Sampling Can Identify the Presence of Heroin
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides environmental and industrial hygiene drug testing to identify the presence of illicit drugs.

Earlier this week, hundreds of Simi Valley residents packed the local city council chambers to express their concerns over heroin use in the area.  The increased concerns arose after a rash of heroin related deaths in the area in the past year.

Simi Valley residents are not alone in their concerns over the presence of heroin in their communities.  Many parts of the country have seen heroin slowly make its way back into the hands of addicts, impacting users, families and businesses.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “Heroin abuse is associated with serious health conditions, including fatal overdose, spontaneous abortion, and—particularly in users who inject the drug—infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. Chronic users may develop collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, abscesses, and liver or kidney disease. Pulmonary complications, including various types of pneumonia, may result from the poor health of the abuser as well as from heroin’s depressing effects on respiration. In addition to the effects of the drug itself, street heroin often contains toxic contaminants or additives that can clog blood vessels leading to the lungs, liver, kidneys, or brain, causing permanent damage to vital organs.”

Suspected users of illicit drugs, such as heroin, have been subject to clinical tests to identify past use.  Environmental sampling for heroin in indoor structures is also possible to identify its presence or residues left by its storage or past use.  EMSL Analytical, Inc., is a leading environmental and industrial hygiene testing laboratory that specializes in analyzing illicit drugs.

“Heroin is a highly addictive narcotic that has destroyed countless lives and cost businesses significant amounts of money due to employee use and abuse,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical.  “Identifying residues and suspect materials can help stop the abuse and destruction caused by heroin.”
