Last month, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of family croquet sets that were manufactured in India and sold in the United States through a major online retailer from May of 2015 through June of 2021. The croquet sets are being recalled due to violations of the federal lead paint and phthalates ban.

According to the recall notice:

The paint or surface coating on the red mallet, blue mallet, red hoop, and winning post contain levels of lead that exceed the federal lead paint ban, posing a lead poisoning hazard. In addition, the coating on the red and blue mallets contains levels of regulated phthalates that exceed the prohibition of specific phthalates. Lead and phthalates are toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health issues.

“Exposure to elevated levels of lead or phthalates is a concern for everyone, but this is especially true for children,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead-based paints used on toys or other products can cause lead poisoning. While the health effects of various phthalate exposures are not completely understood, some are strongly suspected to be endocrine disruptors. Federal regulations restrict their use in certain child care articles and toys because children are easily exposed to these chemicals by handling or chewing on items that contain them.”
