Last month, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced that federal investigators have determined a truck washing company failed to protect workers from hydrogen sulfide gas as they entered over-the-road tanker trailers to clean them out. Tragically, one worker died and two others were hospitalized due to an incident that occurred in September.
According to OSHA, the business failed to evaluate the tanker trailers for hazardous conditions. This included testing the atmosphere. The company allegedly also did not train workers on potential hazards before letting them enter confined spaces, both violations of OSHA regulations. The agency has cited the company for 2 willful and 24 serious violations.
“Companies with workers in occupations where they could be exposed to hydrogen sulfide need to implement the appropriate procedures to identify hazards, provide effective monitoring, and supply and train employees on the proper use of personal protective equipment,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL Analytical provides these resources to protect workers and to help keep companies in regulatory compliance. We offer hydrogen sulfide and other air testing services, gas monitoring instruments, and carry a wide range of PPE.”
Several years ago, EMSL sponsored an educational video about hydrogen sulfide and exposure risks that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/oiVAOrvDKvQ
