It was recently announced a deadly Listeria strain has resulted in nine deaths and 57 hospitalizations across 18 states. The number of cases continues to rise despite the recall announcement from the deli meat manufacturer over a month ago. More than 7 million pounds of meat was recalled.

After investigating the facilities of the meat manufacturer’s Virginia-based facility, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) cited violations of black mold, mildew, cobwebs, and insects were repeatedly found throughout the site, all of which breed necessary conditions for Listeria growth.
