The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that the quality of the air inside of offices, schools, and other workplaces is important not only for workers' comfort, but also for their health. The agency shares that poor indoor air quality (IAQ) has been tied to symptoms like headaches, fatigue, trouble concentrating, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs.
Some specific diseases have also been linked to specific air contaminants or indoor environments, like asthma with damp indoor environments. OSHA warns that some exposures, such as with asbestos and radon, do not cause immediate symptoms but can lead to cancer after many years.
Demand for good IAQ in office buildings has emerged as a major issue, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). EPA also cautions that many office buildings have significant indoor air pollution sources. Some of the sources listed include:
- Furnishings
- Occupant activities
- Housekeeping practices
- Pesticide applications
- Microbial contamination
EPA suggests that a factor greatly influencing the effect of these sources and the overall quality of indoor air in offices is the ventilation system design, operation, and maintenance. They also state that people generally have less control over the indoor environment in the office than they do at home. As a result, there are large numbers of reported health problems associated with office buildings.
“The only way to know for sure what is in the air that office workers and other building occupants are breathing is to have it tested,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “At EMSL Analytical, our network of laboratories located across North America offer indoor air quality, infection control, material, and environmental testing services. We also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and building inspection tools to identify and mitigate contact with a wide range of hazards in the built environment.”
EMSL recently sponsored an educational video about indoor air quality complaints in the office that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/KKoF_ME944g
