Title Almost 500,000 Pounds of Frozen Breakfast Sandwiches Recalled Due to Misbranding and an Undeclared Allergen
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers food labeling and testing services to identify allergens, microbial contaminants, pesticides, and other food safety concerns to protect consumers and to help prevent costly product recalls.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, May 28, 2025

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that a manufacturer of ready-to-eat (RTE) sausage and bacon breakfast sandwich products recalled approximately 489,887 pounds of the product because it contains sesame, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label.

According to the recall notice, the frozen breakfast sandwiches were produced between April 1, 2023, and March 25, 2025. They have a 12-month shelf-life and there are concerns the sandwiches could be in consumers’ freezers or refrigerators. Fortunately, there had been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products at the time of the recall notice.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to food and include milk, eggs, wheat, crustacean shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, and soybeans. Sesame became the ninth major food allergen to require special labeling through the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act, a federal law passed in 2021 that went into effect in 2023.

“To help food manufacturers, importers, and distributors comply with FALCPA, FASTER, and other labeling and testing requirements, the scientists at EMSL Analytical are dedicated to helping companies avoid these types of labeling challenges and the costs associated with recalling products,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Our food scientists offer a wide range of food testing and labeling services. These include testing for allergens, as well as microbial and chemical contaminants. We also provide shelf life studies, FDA import detention services, HAACP guidance and testing, and so much more.”
