Recently, Health Canada announced the recall of a wooden bunny stacker toy due to a chemical hazard. One of the silicone disks that comes with the toy contains levels of lead in excess of the allowable limit under Canada’s Toys Regulations.
According to the recall notice:
Lead is toxic if ingested, especially to children. A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, as well as effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths. Since lead builds up in the body, ongoing exposure to even very small amounts of lead can result in large amounts of lead being present in the body.
“This toy was manufactured in China and sold in Canada between November 2024 and March of this year,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Exposure to lead can cause a myriad of serious health concerns, which is why there are strict product regulations for lead and various other heavy metals in toys and other consumer goods in so many countries. At EMSL Analytical, we are dedicated to protecting consumers and helping businesses avoid costly product recalls. Our experts, working out of laboratories located across Canada and the United States, offer material and product testing services for regulated substances, microbial contaminants, and a wide range of other potential health and safety issues.”
