Earlier this year, it was reported by multiple media outlets that a medical clinic in Indiana temporarily closed one of their buildings due to an unidentified vapor said to be from the petroleum family. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), local officials, and environmental consultants have been involved with trying to determine the vapor intrusion source. In the meantime, the clinic is said to have installed a vapor mitigation system to protect building occupants from potential inhalation exposure risks.
Vapor intrusion occurs when there is a migration of vapor-forming chemicals from any subsurface source into an overlying building. This subsurface source is often contaminated groundwater or soil. These vapor-forming chemicals can cause indoor air quality (IAQ) problems and pose a health concern for building occupants.
“Buildings with high concentrations of chemicals due to vapor intrusion can at times be an immediate risk for building occupants. When lower concentrations of vapor-forming chemicals are involved, the chemicals may pose a risk of health effects due to long-term exposure to these lower levels,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “To help identify and address vapor intrusion concerns, EMSL Analytical offers comprehensive environmental and industrial hygiene laboratory services. We also provide specialized sampling supplies from our testing facilities located across North America.”
