Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned consumers to immediately stop using a brand of imported kitchen faucets sold through a major online retailer due to lead exposure risks. The faucets were imported and sold by a Chinese company.

The CPSC Product Safety Warning states:

The faucets were tested and found to contain lead that can leach into water at levels that can be particularly harmful to young children. The faucets were also found to leach other contaminants.  

The agency warns that lead ingestion can cause harmful neurological effects on young children, including attention-related behavioral problems, decreased cognitive performance, and lower IQ. Indeed, if a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time, permanent damage to the central nervous system can occur.

“In this case, at the time of the Product Safety Warning, the foreign company had not agreed to an acceptable recall, so the CPSC determined that public health and safety required a notice be issued to warn the public of the hazard,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Companies that violate lead and other heavy metal regulations in consumer products are putting consumers at risk.
