Title Legionnaires’ Disease in Central Florida Linked to Gym Leaves 14 Sick
Introduction EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers testing services to assist with identifying potential health risks

Orlando, Florida, December 9, 2025

It was recently announced that over a dozen people have contracted Legionnaires’ disease in an outbreak which has been linked to a gym in central Florida.

Although the state of Florida did not announce any additional cases beyond the gym exposure, there was a previous outbreak in 2017 at the same facility when the building was under a different name.

“Legionnaires' disease, the most severe form of Legionellosis, is a form of pneumonia that is caused by inhalation or aspiration of bacteria that belong to the family Legionellaceae. Legionella are commonly found in aquatic environments and some species have been found in soil” said Joseph Frasca, Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “At EMSL, we offer advanced testing techniques recognized by the CDC ELITE program to identify Legionella”.

EMSL has a network of 21 CDC ELITE laboratories. Our laboratories offer the necessary sampling supplies and a comprehensive set of Legionella testing services including:

• Standard ISO Culture Test with 10-14 Day Turnaround
• Rapid Legiolert 7 Day Culture Test
• Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) Test - (identifies L. pneumophila, L. pneumophila serotype 1 and Legionella spp. in one qPCR test)
• Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) - (identifies Legionella strains for infection source tracking and outbreak investigation)
