Cinnaminson, New Jersey, February 3, 2026
Every February, National Cancer Prevention Month serves as an important reminder of the steps individuals and organizations can take to reduce cancer risk. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), cancer develops when certain genes undergo changes that alter how cells grow and function. While some genetic changes occur naturally during cell division, others arise from environmental exposures that damage DNA.
As the NCI notes, “People can avoid some cancer-causing exposures, such as tobacco smoke and the sun’s rays. But other ones are harder to avoid, especially if they are in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, or the materials we use to do our jobs.”
The importance of prevention is underscored by the number of new diagnoses each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than 1.85 million new cancer cases were identified in the United States in 2022. In 2023, over 613,000 Americans lost their lives to the disease.
“To help raise awareness about the fight against cancer and the steps people can take to lower their chances of developing it, February is recognized as National Cancer Prevention Month,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Reducing environmental exposures to known and probable carcinogens, such as radon, asbestos, formaldehyde, and tobacco smoke in homes, can play an important role. In occupational settings, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health warns that millions of U.S. workers may be exposed to substances that are confirmed or suspected carcinogens.”
EMSL Analytical supports prevention efforts by providing comprehensive environmental, material, and industrial hygiene testing services. Through its nationwide network of laboratories, EMSL analyzes samples for a broad range of known or suspected carcinogens. The company also supplies sampling kits, air monitoring instruments, personal protective equipment, and other tools to help identify, monitor, and reduce exposure risks.
