The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced a voluntary recall involving a single lot of cracked corn livestock feed distributed by a major global animal nutrition company. According to the FDA, the recalled product may have contained aflatoxin levels exceeding established regulatory action limits for livestock, posing potential health risks.
Aflatoxins are mycotoxins that are naturally produced by certain molds and can develop in grains and animal feeds under favorable environmental conditions. The FDA reports that exposure to aflatoxins has been linked to a range of adverse health effects, including aflatoxicosis and liver damage. Aflatoxins are also classified as known carcinogens, and their presence in food and animal feed should be limited to the lowest levels achievable.
In livestock, consumption of aflatoxin-contaminated feed can lead to serious illness. Additionally, these toxins may be transferred to meat, milk, and eggs, increasing the risk of human exposure through the food supply.
“Product recalls are disruptive and costly,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “They can impact brand reputation, supply chains, and customer confidence, while also posing risks to animal and human health. EMSL’s advanced analytical testing services help manufacturers identify contaminants early, before products reach the marketplace.”
