Each year, thousands of U.S. workers face life-threatening risks simply by going to work. In 2023 alone, 5,283 on-the-job fatalities were recorded nationwide. While these numbers are troubling, fatality rates per 100,000 workers provide an even clearer view of danger. Occupations such as logging, commercial fishing, aircraft piloting, refuse collection, and roofing consistently rank among the most hazardous due to risks that include falls, transportation incidents, confined spaces, noise, airborne contaminants, and struck-by hazards.
“Many of the hazards present in high-risk occupations are not only identifiable, but preventable,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Industrial hygiene provides the scientific foundation to recognize workplace dangers, measure exposures, and implement controls that save lives.”
Industrial hygienists are trained to assess chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards. Through site surveys, air and noise sampling, exposure assessments, and analysis of medical-surveillance data, industrial hygiene professionals transform invisible threats into actionable data.
In construction and other high-hazard industries, for example, industrial hygiene strategies may include monitoring diesel exhaust and respirable crystalline silica, testing confined-space atmospheres prior to entry, measuring and mitigating excessive noise, improving ventilation to reduce airborne contaminants, and implementing ergonomic solutions to prevent crushing injuries or musculoskeletal disorders. When combined with worker training, appropriate PPE, and written safety procedures, these measures can significantly reduce both acute injuries and long-term occupational illnesses.
EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading provider of industrial hygiene laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment, has sponsored a new educational video titled “America’s Most Hazardous Jobs — And How Industrial Hygiene Saves Lives.” The video highlights the critical role industrial hygiene plays in preventing injuries, illnesses, and fatalities and can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/O1QwZ8i6m44
