Title Indoor Air Testing and Monitoring Solutions Following Warning About Ultrasonic Humidifiers
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers laboratory testing services and air monitoring instruments to help identify airborne particles, microbes, and humidity issues that can impact indoor air quality in homes, schools, and workplaces.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, May 21, 2026

A recent warning from the American Lung Association about potential health concerns linked to ultrasonic humidifiers is highlighting the importance of maintaining healthy indoor air quality (IAQ). In response, EMSL Analytical, Inc. is reminding the public that professional air testing services and monitoring instruments can help identify indoor air contaminants and environmental conditions associated with humidifier use.

According to the American Lung Association, ultrasonic humidifiers use high-frequency vibrations to create a cool mist that can disperse microscopic particles into the air when filled with tap water. Minerals and other substances in the water may become fine airborne particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs.

The organization also cautions that humidifier reservoirs containing standing water may allow bacteria and mold to grow if they are not cleaned properly. When dispersed into the air, these microorganisms may irritate the respiratory system and worsen symptoms for individuals with asthma or other lung conditions.

“Humidifiers can improve comfort during dry conditions, but poor maintenance or water quality issues can introduce airborne particles or microbes indoors,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Testing and monitoring indoor air quality can help determine if these issues are present and guide corrective actions.”

EMSL’s network of laboratories provides indoor air quality testing services to detect contaminants and environmental indicators potentially associated with humidifier use or excess indoor humidity, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), bacterial and fungal bioaerosols, allergens, and moisture-related indicators.

In addition, EMSL offers air monitoring instruments that allow homeowners, school administrators, building managers, and environmental professionals to track key IAQ parameters such as particulate levels, relative humidity, and temperature in real time.

EMSL has also sponsored an educational video with tips to reduce the dispersal of microorganisms and minerals from humidifiers: https://youtu.be/yzJoi5XWZW8
