Petrographic Analysis of Cement is used to determine the type and concentration of the components in cementitous material. Quartz, calcite, "Portland", particle size and the porosity are among some of the characteristics of interest. This analysis is routinely used to verify that a blend of concrete has been mixed to the correct specifications required by the project or to determine the characteristics of an existing mortar so that repairs or additions can be performed using the same material. This is commonly used when repairing buildings of historical significance.
Elemental mapping aids in viewing the particle size and dispersion. Individual grains of Quartz, Calcite and binders can be clearly seen in the maps from a mortar of historical significance.
