Oil Mist Analysis is performed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR), Method NIOSH 5026
Oil Mists have been linked to numerous heath related problems and have been added to the list for carcinogenic material. Mineral oil mist can cause eye, skin and respiratory irritation as well as effect the central nervous system.
Sampling for Oil Mists can be performed with 5.0 micron Polyvynil chloride (PVC) or 0.8 to .45 micron Mixed Cellulose Ester (MCE) filters. Personal monitoring is typically performed at slightly higher flow rates for a longer duration. Care should be taken to avoid filter clogging which will alter the flow rate and total volume. If the flow rate drops indicating an overloaded filter, terminate the sampling. If possible, submit a vial of the oil in question for standard preparation.
