Cyanobacteria are a group of bacteria, although they are traditionally included among algae because both are photosynthetic organisms. Cyanobacteria therefore is also called blue green algae. Cyanobacteria may cause harmful agal blooms (HABs). There has been an increase in harmful agal blooms. Some HABs are associated with algae-produced toxins.
